The Internet Debacle - An Alternative View by Janis Ian
When I research an article, I normally send 30 or so emails to friends and acquaintances asking for opinions and anecdotes. I usually receive 10-20 in reply. But not so on this subject! I sent 36 emails requesting opinions and facts on free music downloading from the Net. I stated that I planned to adopt the viewpoint of devil's advocate: free Internet downloads are good for the music industry and its artists. I've received, to date, over 300 replies, every single one from someone legitimately "in the music business." More....

Fallout - A Follow up to The Internet Debacle by Janis Ian
Quite frankly, when I spent three months researching and writing The Internet Debacle, I wasn't planning to become part of a "cause". I assumed that the 35,000 subscribers of Performing Songwriter Magazine might read it, and a few might email me about it. I had no idea that a scant month later, the article would be posted on over 1,000 sites, translated into nine languages, and have been featured on the BBC. More....

An Introduction to Free Music Philosophy by Ram Samudrala
The Free Music Philosophy is an idea, inspired by the efforts and successes of the Free Software Foundation, that encourages free copying, use, and modification of music. Like in the case of free software, the word "free" refers to freedom, not price. The basic philosophy is that abridging the freedom of use (copying, distributing, modifying) of music is destructive to society as a whole. As written, the Free Music philosophy refers only to noncommercial uses of music. There exists a follow-up "progress and prospects" article which describes the scheme I use to market my music which refers to commercial uses also. More....

Free Music Philosophy by Ram Samudrala

  • What is the Free Music Philosophy (FMP)?
  • What does it mean to use the term "Free Music"?
  • Why must we Free Music?
  • Isn't free copying of music infringing copyright law?
  • Why is the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 inadequate? More....

Free Music: progress and prospects by Ram Samudrala
It has been over a year since I proposed the Free Music Philosophy (FMP) on the www Having done that, I proceeded to free my music as outlined in the FMP and I released a seventy minute album (in compact disc, cassette tape, and digital audio tape formats) about six months ago. I loan people copies of my album so they can copy it and give it to their friends. More....

A Primer on the Ethics of "Intellectual Property" by Ram Samudrala
This primer provides a general framework for freeing any information covered under copyright and patent laws. Everything I've created, on this website and elsewhere, is copiable without restrictions. Over the last several years, especially after I wrote the Free Music Philosophy in mid-1993, I have been arguing about the so-called "rights to intellectual property" on the Internet. More....

The Future of Music by Ram Samudrala
I've seen the future and it will be... A battle between the Cathedral and the Bazaar. Before I explain what I mean, I will be the first to admit that all this is rather pretentious. Attempting to predict the future of a complex dynamic system is, by definition, impossible. However, I believe that we can influence the direction the system evolves and I hope that what I write becomes more of a self-fulfilling prophecy rather than anything else. With that disclaimer, let's move on: More....
